True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt relocates himself, his wife Tracy and their two young children to a woodland house where murders he's researching for his new book took place. In the attic, Oswalt finds a box ostensibly containing home movies but which, in fact, record the slaying of families across the US over decades.
Probing further, he discovers, with the help of a local deputy and professor, links to a terrifying ancient deity. But it's only once sinister and threatening incidents begin at home that he realises he's placed his own family in dreadful peril.
