This, the first of the hit series of computer-animated fantasy animations, kicks off the trilogy in fine style. Released in 2001, it stars Shrek, a reclusive, anti-social green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) who is perfectly happy with his life of solitude until he's disrupted by a horde of refugees who have been banished by the evil Lord Farquaad. The only way Shrek can have some peace and quiet is if he's prepared to rescue Farquaad's bride-to-be (Princess Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz) from a dangerous castle.
A pretty thin beauty-and-the-beast tale, it's great for kids, with plenty of action-film references for adults to savour.
