Robert Altman's lengthy 1993 film, based on Raymond Carver's short stories, follows a crowd of Los Angelinos whose lives, while initially seen separately, all intersect at some point.
With shades of Altman's own Nashville, the film has a superb and large ensemble cast. Highlights include Jack Lemmon's confession of adultery and Peter Gallagher's literal take on dividing property with his ex-wife, but that's to take nothing away from a stellar cast, including Andie MacDowell, Tim Robbins, Chris Penn, Frances McDormand, Lily Tomlin, Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Tom Waits.
Carver fans may be disappointed by Altman's interpretation, but for those not familiar with the stories, the film works well.
