Graham Holt is a middle-aged bachelor who runs the post office in a small village and whose father is dying. On an impulse, he decides to adopt a son, who turns out to be James, a difficult child whose father John is in prison. As the chalk-and-cheese pair try to bond, they must both face a challenge from their respective fathers that will change their relationship.
