Rita Hayworth and Stuart Granger star in William Dieterle's Biblical drama. In Galilee, the Jewish teacher and prophet John the Baptist is causing King Herod great grief by denouncing his marriage to Queen Herodias, his brother's widow. While he would like rid of John, Herod is scared to touch him because he believes he will suffer a protracted, ghastly death if he harms the prophet. Herodias is far less superstitious and simply wants John dead. Into this malicious mix comes Herodias's beautiful daughter Salome. She has long lived in Rome and, via her love of Claudius, a Roman military officer who is secretly Christian, is predisposed towards the new religious cult. Salome therefore sets out to free the now imprisoned John, even if that means performing the dance of the seven veils for the licentious Herod.
