In a futuristic, crime-driven, company-run Detroit, a cop called Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is killed during a gang fight. The company in the meanwhile have developed a crime-fighting robot which has suddenly gone awry. To gain the public's favour, they reconstruct Murphy's body within a steel shell and name him RoboCop.
RoboCop becomes a much loved and respected member of the law force and a loathed specimen by the crime underworld, in particular the supervillain Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), until he starts having flashbacks to a life he can't quite remember.
Released in 1987 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, this is the best of the RoboCop films, a blistering blend of violence, subversive satire and sci-fi thriller.
