Drew is a bright, ambitious teenager, determined to escape her working class background with parents James Woods and Lorraine Bracco. But on the rebound from a crush, she falls for and falls pregnant by Steve Zahn, an amiable but not-too-bright boy. At 16, she's a wife and a mother, still determined to finish college but weighed down by responsibility. Penny Marshall's film, told in flashback, is based on Beverly D'Onfrio's book of her struggle to become a writer.
