A spectacular adventure set in 19th-century Georgia and focusing on a group of divers who make their living by salvaging from shipwrecks. The strongly etched characters include two heroes who fight for the affections of a beautiful and feisty young woman, and a thoroughly evil villain who hinders the efforts of the divers. The impressive underwater sequences led to an Oscar for the special effects team.
