When cop Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) is murdered by his partner, it looks like an early exit from the force, until he is snapped up by an otherworldly law enforcement brigade called the Rest In Peace Departement.
The R.I.P.D. employs ex-officers to capture spirits that fail to cross into the afterlife and, instead, remain on Earth in the guise of terrifying monsters. Nick is paired with grizzled former Wild West sheriff Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges) and the pair develop a grudging respect, little realising they are about to become responsible for the future of the living.
Robert Schwentke combines the sensibilities of previous directorial efforts Red and The Time Traveller's Wife for this mixture of action comedy and slightly off-kilter romance. Though not receiving the warmest of reviews upon release, R.I.P.D. is nicely cast and for popcorn movie lovers delivers plenty of knockabout fun.
