One of the best crime movies of the 1990s, this blistering thriller put director Carl Franklin on the Hollywood A-list.
Three drug thieves flee from a murder scene and wind up in Dirt Road, a small town in Arkansas. The local sheriff, Chief Dale "Hurricane" Dixon (Bill Paxton), is excited by the prospect of real criminals on his patch for once, and even more thrilled when he's joined by two no-nonsense detectives from the LAPD to help him.
The detectives are less than impressed by what they see as Hurricane's backward ways, making him more determined to show them what he's capable of - to the extent that he'll even withhold information from them to keep the upper hand.
At the heart of the story are two parallel tales of desperation, as Hurricane seeks to break out of his comfort zone, and the wanted trio - Michael Beach, Cynda Williams (pictured) and Billy Bob Thornton (pictured) - try to keep under his radar. But one of the characters harbours an earth-shattering secret that will put them all on a collision course before the final frame...
Gripping and highly recommended.
