Lars von Trier

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård and Stacy Martin star in the first part of Lars von Trier's controversial, sexually explicit drama about a woman's self-diagnosed nymphomania. When the erudite Seligman finds Joe roughed up in a dark alley, he takes her to his apartment to care for her, and asks what happened. Warning him it's a shocking, unpleasant story, she then recounts a life driven by an all-encompassing lust for sex. In flashback, Joe describes how her discovery of masturbation sparked a hunger for 'the sensation'. The perfunctory riddance of her virginity to rough mechanic Jerôme swiftly followed; and then began Joe's avid exploration of her sexuality and her quest for ever more partners. As Seligman listens to her, interjecting now and again with his own thoughts, the frequency and incongruity of Jerôme's appearances make him question Joe about the veracity of her story. Vol I closes just before Joe's memoir takes a darker turn.
