It's 31 December and a group of New Yorkers are set for a New Year's Eve to remember.
After a particularly bad day, secretary Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) quits her job and persuades hunky young delivery guy Paul (Zac Efron) to help her fulfil a list of life goals before the clock strikes midnight. Paul's friend Randy (Ashton Kutcher), meanwhile, hates New Year's Eve, but after getting stuck in a lift with cute songstress Elise (Lea Michele), he might just change his mind.
Teenager Hailey (Abigail Breslin) is desperate to persuade her uptight mum (Sarah Jessica Parker) to let her spend the occasion with her boyfriend, but will she and a host of other Big Apple residents get the New Year's Eve they desire?
The director of Valentine's Day follows up his hit ensemble romance with a quasi-sequel set around another date on the calendar that (apparently) brings people together in heartwarming fashion. Garry Marshall has assembled another impossibly starry cast packed with everyone from Oscar winners like Hilary Swank to TV favourites including Glee's Michele and Modern Family's Sofía Vergara.
Its sugary contrivances may require an ultra-sweet tooth, but offering more opportunity for stars potting than a tour of the Hollywood Hills, New Year's Eve provides an undemanding bit of festive fun.
