Mark Romanek directs the cream of young British acting talent in this adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-nominated dystopian fable.
With a screenplay by Alex Garland, the film follows teens Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy as they leave the confines of their uniquely regimented boarding school and take their first steps into the wider world. As the trio form a convincing love triangle and test the boundaries of their post-school existence, the realisation that they have been raised for a specific and deadly purpose hits home with subtle but inescapable force.
The story wears its sci-fi trappings lightly, and it's the closeness of the film's world to reality that makes the powerlessness of the protagonists all the more heartbreaking.
