This jaunty 1994 Aussie comedy-drama has many poignant touches. Frumpy twentysomething Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) is mocked by her mates, dreams of wedding dresses and getting hitched, and lives in a fantasy world, full of Abba songs. Having stung her parents out of money, she finally escapes her Northern Australia small-town life to flat share with Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths) in Sydney, and things turn more poignant.
Effortlessly directed by PJ Hogan, the movie won the 1994 Australian Film Institute Award for best film. Delightful, especially if you're a big Abba fan.
