Five years previously, Jeffrey's young nieces vanished along with their parents. Now the youngsters have been found, having somehow survived alone in an old house deep in the woods. Their isolation has taken its toll: the girls are barely more than feral creatures. But they are healthy and in need, so - after a period of rehabilitation with Dr Dreyfuss - Jeffrey takes them in and starts to give them a normal life, helped by his girlfriend Annabel.
However, that house in woods has a dark history, which connects the girls and their parents to grim events from 100 years before. And they didn't survive those years unaided, which is where their super-scary 'Mama' enters the story
