In nightmarish scenes, Australia's sun-baked highways are ruled by violent gangs who rob and terrorise the innocent. One victim is policeman Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson). When Max killed their leader The Knight Rider, a murderous motorcycle gang led by the evil Toecutter killed his partner Jim Goose and murdered his wife and son. Max - now "Mad Max" - resorts to vigilante justice as he sets out to get his revenge on the motorcycle gang.
George Miller's low-budget 1979 cult-action drama brought Mel Gibson firmly into the limelight as a rising star, and was a huge hit, spawning two sequels. Produced on a wafer-thin budget, Mad Max made it into the Guinness Book of Records for achieving the highest profit-to-cost ratio of any movie (it cost approximately $400,000 to make and earnt more than $100 million at the box office). The minimal budget rarely shows. There's so much high-octane action going on here that it's a breath-taking ride. Highly recommended.
