Sir Patrick Stewart stars as Macbeth and Kate Fleetwood (Hustle, Waking The Dead) as Lady Macbeth in a spectacularly dark, contemporary and stylish film version of William Shakespeare's tragedy, originally staged by the Chichester Festival Theatre, and then a West End and Broadway hit.
Directed by Rupert Goold, who maintains the atmosphere and tone of his original Tony Award-nominated stage version, Macbeth was filmed on location at Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, and is set in an undefined and ominous central European country. The hauntingly atmospheric film offers a very 20th century allegory of war and the quest for power and is a dramatic and enthralling recreation of Shakespeare's claustrophobic and bloody tragedy.
Other cast recreating their original stage roles for the film version include: Michael Feast as Macduff; Martin Turner as Banquo; Scott Handy as Malcolm; Paul Shelley as Duncan; Suzanne Burden as Lady Macduff; and Christopher Patrick Nolan as The Porter.
