Jodie Foster's directorial debut sees her star alongside Adam Hann-Byrd and Dianne Wiest in a drama about the difficulties of child genius. Dede Tate is a working-class single mother who quickly recognises that her young son Fred is immensely intelligent. While obviously wanting him to fulfil his intellectual potential, she also wants Fred to enjoy his childhood, so she sends him to a normal school. However, his intelligence and musical abilities set him apart from the rest of the kids, forcing Dede to reluctantly decide that Fred may be better off at a specialist school. But placing him at former-child-prodigy-turned-child-psychiatrist Jane Grierson's academy for the gifted only seems to bring more problems for Dede and Fred. Also starring Harry Connick Jnr and PJ Ochlan as people who do their best to try to help Fred bridge the gap between brilliance and the quotidian. Edited for content.
