It's the 1920s and college gridiron is America's number-one sport. So coach Jimmy "Dodge" Connelly (George Clooney) pulls a fast one, signing amateur superstar Carter "The Bullet" Rutherford for his pro team.
The Bullet (John Krasinski) is just the tonic for the Duluth Bulldogs - not only is he a footballing stud, but he's a war hero to boot. Sportswriter Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger) isn't so sure about his Second World War exploits. She snuggles up to the new poster boy, determined to out him as a phoney.
When Jimmy also falls for Lexie, the two jocks are set against each other. Carter might be twinkled-toed on the field, but off it he's a Bullet that won't be dodged.
In his third film in the director's chair, Clooney counterpoints the mud and mayhem with Cary Grantstyle verbal acrobatics. The result is a screwball sports romcom, thrown in a perfect spiral.
