Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn star in John Sturges's western. US Marshal Matt Morgan is after the two cowboys who raped and murdered his Native American wife while she was travelling with their son Petey. Morgan's sole clue to the cowboys' identity is the saddle on the horse that Petey used to escape the crime scene. It's like one owned by his best friend, the cattle baron Craig Belden, who lives in and effectively runs the town of Gun Hill. So Morgan heads there, intent on apprehending the culprits who seemingly also stole Belden's horses. Morgan's plan comes unstuck when he gets to the town and realises one of the guilty men is Belden's son Rick. Belden refuses to hand over his son and rallies the entire town against the marshal. But Morgan remains determined to arrest the men and carry them to justice on the last train leaving town that night, despite the peril he now faces. With Carolyn Jones. First screening on Film4.
