Roddy McDowall plays Joe Carraclough, the son of poor Yorkshire farmers and the proud owner of the collie Lassie. But unable to keep the dog, his parents sell it to the kindly Duke of Ruding. He takes the dog to his Highland estate, where his granddaughter Priscilla falls for her but seeing her so homesick, helps the collie escape. With an unerring sense of direction, Lassie heads home but, on the way, runs the risk of being accused of sheep-worrying as well as capture by the dog catcher before an emotional reunion in Fred M Wlicox's drama.
