Drama set in Depression-era St Louis, in which a young boy is forced to become self-reliant after his family fragments. The lad is left to fend for himself in a hotel after his salesman father accepts a faraway job and his ailing mother is admitted to a sanatorium. The streetwise 12-year-old soon learns to live off his wits, conning money out of the other hotel guests. Based on the memoirs of A E Hotchner

Depression era movie. The protagonist is a little boy who's mother is forced into a sanitarium and who's father gets a traveling salesman job. The boy fends for himself in a seedy SRO hotel. The focus is on the boy's relationships with others and his struggle to survive.
