In the Kingdom of Cloister, farmhand Jack (Nicholas Hoult) causes havoc when he trades his uncle's horse for a handful of magic beans. Discarded by his livid uncle (Christopher Fairbank), the seeds find firm ground and send giant stalks careering outwards and upwards, taking Jack's house and a visiting princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) with it.
Knocked unconscious in the furore, Jack awakens the next day to be greeted by swashbuckling soldier Elmont (Ewan McGregor) and snide King's advisor Roderick (Stanley Tucci). The trio head into the clouds, where they discover monstrous giants roaming free. But when the creatures smell blood, all hell breaks loose.
X-Men's Bryan Singer feeds the quaint enchantment of English folklore through the Hollywood movie machine to create an action-packed romp that stays true to its core. Some of the dialogue might not be the stuff of legend, but there's enough fun and entertaining visual fare in this feature for most of the family to enjoy.
