Director Amarjeet's romantic drama starring Dev Anand is set during the Second World War in Burma, where Indian soldiers served in the British army. Hum Dono has a strong anti-war message, exploring how conflict destroys the lives of civilians as well as combatants. After making a heroic solo stand to save his men from the advancing Japanese, Major Verma is missing in action, presumed dead. The task of informing Verma's family falls to Captain Anand, who happens to be the spitting image of his commanding officer. When Anand arrives at the Major's home he is, unsurprisingly, mistaken for the missing Major, but fails to immediately correct the error.
