Irving Berlin's easy-going musical brought Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire together on screen for the first time in a tale of showbiz and romantic rivalries. Crosby and Astaire are a song-and-dance team, until Crosby's character decides to take early retirement and open a hotel that only opens on public holidays. This canny move ensures him an exceptionally light workload, and provides a calendar to structure the film and its songs, most notably White Christmas, which went on to become the best-selling single of all time. Marjorie Reynolds plays the gal who catches both men's eye, and in the absence of Ms Rogers provides able support in this warm-hearted and comfortable classic of the era. First screening on Film4.
