New York is plagued by motiveless murders - a sniper picks of random targets, a father murders his family, a cop opens fire on a parade. And when apprehended, each of the perpetrators simply says, "God told me to". Cop Tony Lo Bianco is assigned to the case and begins to suspect the involvement of Christ-like Richard Lynch. But it isn't until he interviews Lynch's mother that the full, horrifying truth emerges. Cult B-movie director Larry Cohen's film rises above the usual fare with thoughtful scenes where religion and the misinterpretation of God are calmly covered alongside others of tension and occult horror.
