Germany Year Zero (1948)

Roberto Rossellini's third film in his WWII trilogy, after Paisa and Rome, Open City, is set in the shattered ruins of Berlin. Edmund Meschke plays Edmund Koehier, a 12-year-old survivor who cares for his remaining family by scrounging and foraging for food and money. He falls under the spell of his ex-teacher Herr Enning, who helps him out while instilling in him the Nazi's doctrines, lessons that lead to tragedy.
