This 1997 science-fiction thriller is set in a world where genetic modification has created an elite class of perfect people. Children with the best hereditary traits are selected for professional employment but those who are conceived by traditional means are considered in-valids, and are relegated to menial jobs.
Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke, pictured) is a lowly janitor whose dream is to become an astronaut. He conspires with Jerome Eugene Morrow (a genetically modified but disabled man, played by Jude Law) to enter the space programme. He quickly becomes the company's ace celestial navigator, and starts a relationship with co-worker Irene Cassini (Uma Thurman). But Vincent's scheme is jeopardised when an official at the centre is murdered and investigators arrive on the scene.
The film explores the possible consequences of a society that is driven by eugenics, as the characters battle to find their place in the world according to their genes.
