Guy Hamilton's Cold War thriller starring Michael Caine and Oskar Homolka is the second film to be based on Len Deighton's character Harry Palmer. Reluctant British spy Palmer is pressured into accepting his latest assignment by his superior, Ross. Palmer is sent to West Berlin to link up with fellow agent Johnny Vulkan, who helps him get behind the Berlin Wall to meet Russian Communist Intelligence chief Colonel Stok, who is anxious to defect. Stok is charming, but he wants his defection to be arranged by West German criminal Otto Kreutzman, in a plan that involves a funeral in which Stok will be substituted for a real corpse. Palmer soon grows suspicious of everyone's motives, including Vulkan's, and his sense of danger is heightened when he is seduced by the beautiful model Samantha Steel, who he later discovers to be an Israeli agent. Edited for content. The third Harry Palmer adventure, Billion Dollar Brain, screens on Film4 tomorrow afternoon.
