In many small American towns the fortunes of the local football team assume enormous importance to local people looking for respite from the drudgery of daily life. The Permian Panthers, heroes of the depressed town of Odessa in Texas are one such team. The film follows the team's 1988 season. It looks at the trials and tribulations of Coach Gaines, in a town where nothing less than total success in the State Championships is good enough.
