The second film in the New Voices season of Bollywood film is introduced by director Nandita Das, a brave new talent in Indian cinema, which often shies away from politically sensitive issues.
An established actress well known for her roles in intelligent and politically charged films such as Fire and Earth, Das makes her debut as director with Firaaq. Set in 2002 in India's westernmost state of Gujarat one month after anti-Muslim riots killed hundreds of people, Firaaq examines the effects - both psychological and material - of the looting, arson and murder. The film tells the stories of Hindus and Muslims, rich and poor, innocent and complicit.
