This Oscar-winning offbeat crime drama, released in 1996, is one of the finest efforts from directors Joel and Ethan Coen. In the icy heart of snow-blanketed Minnesota, Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy is a hapless car salesman so desperate for money to pay off his debts that he hatches a plan to kidnap his own wife so he can extort money out of her father.
Unfortunately, things don't go smoothly when the two thugs (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) he hires shoot both a state trooper and two innocent bystanders, drawing heavily pregnant local Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Oscar-winner Frances McDormand, pictured) into her first homicide investigation.
At first unaware that the homicides are connected to a Minneapolis kidnapping, Chief Gunderson draws closer to Jerry Lundegaard as his situation further unravels.
Highly recommended.
