Jessie (Sean Connery) is an ageing career criminal who has links in the past with the mafia. He has been in more jails, fights and schemes than anyone else.

His son Vito (Dustin Hoffman), however is on the straight and narrow, finally leaving his fairly shady past where it belongs - with his father, in the past!!

The two, although disagree on many many things however, do agree on one thing - the great hope they share for Vito's son Adam (Matthew Broderick), and Jessie's grandson.

Adam is a bright, good-looking, and criminally innocent young adult with a rosy future ahead of him.

So when Adam approaches Jessie with a scheme for a burglary the two men are more than shocked, but not necessarily disinterested.

Jessie jumps on the wagon straight away thinking his grandson has finally fdecided to join the family business. However his father is less impressed and tries everything to stop him turning bad.

Yet he soon realises that the only way to protect his son from the claws of his grandfather, and the police, is to join the plan so as to protect his son. But how will it all end?
