When his two youngest children are diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, biotechnology executive John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) decides to take drastic action.
Founding his own biotech company to find a cure for the rare muscle-wasting affliction Pompe's disease, Crowley tracks down the one man who he believes may be able to help. Grouchy and solitary by nature, brilliant research scientist Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford) could hardly be called a people person but Crowley manages to secure his services. As the two clash over the project, however, and the funding problems become insurmountable, Crowley is ever aware that time is running out for his kids.
