Eve's Bayou (1997)

Directed by
Kasi Lemmons

This 1997 deep and soulful drama, set in 1962 Louisiana, avoids the glitter of a blockbuster and instead unfolds a rich and moving story from the memory of Eve Batiste (Jurnee Smollett), one of the daughter's in a well respected family.

The father of the family is Louis (Samuel L. Jackson), the very handsome town doctor, and though he is married to the stunningly attractive Roz (Lynn Whitfield), he still has a perchant for other women.

Eve follows her unknowing father to one of his female clients' house one day and see's them in a passionate embrace which traumatises her so much she tells her older sister Cisely (Meagon Good) and the lies and misunderstandings start to roll.

Eve then thinks her father is sexually abusing Cisely and these disparate recollections build into a compelling tale of burgeoning sexuality, misunderstanding and murder.
