This powerful and moving comedy drama, based on Willy Russell's hit stage play, is tremendous. Julie Walters (pictured) turns in a powerhouse performance as Rita "Susan" White, a hairdresser who dreams of rising above her drab urban existence through higher learning. Michael Caine (pictured) is equally strong in one of his classic performances as Frank Bryant, the drunken lecturer who Rita chooses to be her tutor.
Released in 1983, Walters, Caine and Russell all won Oscar nominations. Highly recommended.
