Stephen Fry's directorial debut is based on Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies about a penniless, jobless unemployable sort of chap whose only hope of money and position is to throw himself into the hedonistic social scene of the 30s. Fry managed to recruit an A-list of stars, all of whose performances, even if brief, illuminate a film that exactly captures the giddy time between the two world wars.
