This film follows Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr), Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube), three neighbourhood friends, as they confront the grim reality of life in South Central Los Angeles.
Tre is a young boy growing up under the strong moral influence of his single father Furious Styles (Larry Fishburne) who is a principled man determined to see that his son fulfills his true potential. Headed for college, Tre's future looks brighter than that of Ricky and Doughboy, whose undisciplined family life fails to prevent them from becoming involved with the 'hood's criminal element and gangs.
