James Rolleston stars in writer-director-co-star Taika Waititi's coming of age comedy-drama, Waititi's second feature; he has since directed the vampire comedy-horror What We Do in the Shadows and Marvel Comics' Thor: Ragnarok. A boy who hero worships his absent father comes to realise how immature his dad actually is. Set in 1984 in a rural Maori community in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region, the film centres on a smart, Michael Jackson-obsessed 11-year-old everyone simply calls Boy. Boy and his younger brother Rocky have been brought up on their grandmother Nan's farm since their mother died and their father disappeared from their lives. One day, while Nan is away attending a funeral, the brothers are overjoyed when their father Alamein turns up out of the blue with two members of the gang he leads. At first, they think he has come to reclaim his family, but they soon discover that his appearance has more to do with the reason he was jailed years ago.
