Clive Owen, Billy Crudup and Zoe Saldana star in French actor-director Guillaume Canet's English-language directorial debut, a thriller set against the backdrop of 1970s New York. Having served nine years for a gang-related murder, Chris is released from prison. He returns to the family fold, where his cop brother Frank is less than happy to see him but reluctantly agrees to put him up. The strained relationship with his sibling is not Frank's only concern: he also wants to get back with his former girlfriend Vanessa, who is inconveniently married to a criminal he has just arrested. Meanwhile, Chris hopes his early release for good behaviour will pave the way to a more wholesome future. But his past activities and affiliations keep resurfacing and, combined with the pressures of his dysfunctional family life, the temptations to return to his criminal ways get stronger by the day.
