Jude Law stars in Kevin Macdonald's thriller. After 11 years with marine salvage company Agora, submarine captain Robinson loses his job because modern salvage requires neither pilots nor subs. Also bitter with Agora is Robinson's friend Kurston, who was sacked because of his depression. Kurston tells Robinson and their Russian associate Blackie of Agora's shelved plans to salvage a Nazi U-boat stuffed with two tons of Russian gold bullion, which sank in the Black Sea in 1941. A revenge plot is hatched. Robinson and Blackie assemble a half British, half Russian crew, and buy a heavily rusted Cold-War-era sub in the Crimean port of Sevastopol. Now they 'just' need to secretly snatch the bullion from under the noses of Russia and Georgia. The parlous state of the sub is a concern, but greater jeopardy lies in the crew's character faults and, counterintuitively, in Robinson's promise of equal shares of the profits.
