Ken Loach's period adventure is set in 1750, with Jean Franval in the title role as a French sailor who escapes hanging and teams up with young Stephen Hirst and, later, Louise Cooper, a young girl committed by her parents for her eccentric behaviour. Together, the three travel the land before ending up with a bunch of travellers where romance blossoms.
