Ray Winstone stars as 9th-century warrior Beowulf in Robert Zemeckis's animated adventure, based on the Norse myth.
The soldiers of King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) are massacred by the monster Grendel. Beowulf promises revenge. He destroys the creature, but its cunning mother (Angelina Jolie) snares the warrior for one night of passion. And although Hrothgar's people think the curse has been lifted, she lies in wait for her moment of revenge.
American director Zemeckis has blazed a high-tech trail through three decades, innovating in films such as Back To The Future, Forrest Gump and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This is his second shot at the motion-capture film technique, in which actors wear special bodysuits and perform against a blue screen. But whereas The Polar Express was slightly creepy, Beowulf ripples with power and narrative drive and his most visually striking picture yet.
