Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in director Amma Asante's period drama, which is based on the true story of Georgian Britain's first mixed-race aristocrat, Dido Belle. Born in 1761 in the West Indies, Dido was the illegitimate child of Royal Navy admiral Sir John Lindsay and an African slave. After her mother's death in 1765, Sir John boldly relocates his daughter to London, where she is raised in luxury by his uncle, Lord Mansfield - the Lord Chief Justice - and his wife Lady Elizabeth, along with another of their nieces, Elizabeth. Dido is treated as an equal by the family, but her race often supersedes her social standing in high society. And this becomes more pronounced when she has grown into a beautiful young woman and thoughts turn to an appropriate marriage for her. But has Dido already found romance, with her uncle's apprentice lawyer John Davinier, a passionate evangelist for the abolition of slavery?
