Guru Dutt

A leisurely-paced film noir-style thriller with romance at its heart, director Guru Dutt's debut film stars Dev Anand as Madan, a small-time gambler who struggles to make ends meet. His sister has TB and is in the care of his sweetheart, Dr Rajni. When his sister's treatment requires more money, Madan decides to take work at the Star Club, a notorious gambling den for thieves and crooks. There he attracts the attention of the lovely dancer Nina, who falls for him at first sight... Inspired by Charles Vidor's 1946 noir-romance Gilda, Baazi opened the doors for scores of Indian crime thrillers, and kicked off a hugely successful career for director Dutt. Its melodious and popular music was the result of an early collaboration between acclaimed composer SD Burman and poet/lyricist Sahir Ludhiavi. The movie made Dev Anand an overnight star. Also starring KN Singh and Johnny Walker. This is the first in a short season of Dev Anand films and is introduced by the actor.
