A Merchant Navy captain accepts a demotion so he can serve in the Second World War, and ends up a lieutenant on board a transport ship. The harsh methods employed by the captain to whip his crew into shape lead to tension between them, which gives way to mutual respect as they fight through the dangers of the Pacific campaign.
