Arabesque (1966)

Directed by
Stanley Donen

Stanley Donen's spy thiller starring Gregory Peck, Sophia Loren and Alan Badel. Professor David Pollock is a specialist in Arabic hieroglyphics at Oxford University. He's approached by mysterious Arabian businessman Nejim Beshraavi, who offers him $30,000 to decipher a puzzling inscription. Ensconced in Beshraavi's palatial home, he meets Yasmin Azir, Beshraavi's mistress. She tells Pollock that once he solves the riddle, he will be killed to safeguard its meaning; it holds the key to a peace treaty that's due to be signed by an Arabian prime minister, who is also due to be assassinated. Azir helps Pollock to escape. But his knowledge of the plot makes him a marked man and Beshraavi sends his heavies on his trail. How far can he trust Azir, who seems to be playing both ends against the middle?
