The headstrong and starstruck Adele August (Susan Sarandon) becomes bored with her small-town Bay City existence, dumps her boring husband and sets off for the bright lights of Beverly Hills for a more exciting life.
With her unwilling daughter Ann (Nathalie Portman) in tow, she attempts to snare a new husband capable of financing the life to which she wishes to become accustomed.
Yet, Anne resents the move and her mother's always flamboyant behaviour and in turns plans to get away to university on the east coast. Mum's plans are different - she wants a movie star for a daughter.
