Mauela (Cecilia Roth) is a single mother whom has spent the last 17 years bringing up her only son, Esteban (Eloy Azorín) who wants to be writer.
However, one fateful day on his 17th birthday, Esteban runs after a famous actress to ask her for an autograph, and is killed by a car.
Now Mauela must find Esteban's long-lost father, who has since become a transvestite called Lola, to inform him of the news that, one, he has a child and that, two, he has died. She sets off to Barcelona to start her search.
First of all she finds his friend, Agrado (Antonia San Juan), who is also a transvestite. She then, through her, meets Sister Rosa (Penélope Cruz), a young nun headed for El Salvador, and by chance, becomes the personal assistant of Huma Rojo (Marisa Paredes), the actress her son so adored.
Soon Manuela helps Huma manage Nina (Candela Peña), her co-star and Huma's lover, and she becomes Rosa's caretaker during a dangerous pregnancy.
Throughout the remainder of the film the mothers, fathers and actors live out grief, love, and friendship in this award-winning, superbly made drama.
