Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) is a wise-cracking, loose-talking literary agent who says anything to get what he wants. However, when he reneges on a promise to publish the book of spiritual guru Dr Sinja (Cliff Curtis), he finds himself lost for words - literally.
Thanks to an irate Sinja's mystical powers, a magical tree grows in Jack's garden which loses a leaf for every word that the publishing hotshot utters. When the last leaf drops to the ground the tree will die, and so will Jack. In silence, he must try to get on with his high-flying life, and figure out what needs to change in order for him to break the curse.
